“Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Nehemiah 8:10 ESV

It was a rookie mistake on night shift. But to this day, I still can’t type it out. “Man, it sure is ‘q-word’ tonight.” It wasn’t for long, and boy, did everyone on my squad remind me of it. You just don’t say that word, especially when it’s a full moon! What I’ve learned is that if it’s a “q-word” night or day during your shift, enjoy it. Do something to boost your team’s morale by grilling or getting a meal together. However, in my experience, do not say that word! Most of you will know what I am talking about here!

When we’re in a peaceful moment, use it to cultivate a stronger team bond or a positive outlook. Take time to reflect on all you have to be grateful for in your life. This training devotional is intended to inform those who are unaware of the importance of not using the ‘q-word’ about its significance. Let the seasoned first responders say, “Amen.”

Heavenly Father, thank you for the moments of calm, and even when they’re full of chaos, for the peace only you can give. Help me remember the importance of enjoying the moments to the fullest and, in a way, honoring You. Amen

Note: This entry is from an upcoming devotional entitled “Beyond the Call: 366 Devotions for First Responders,” releasing in late 2026 or early 2027.
