A few days ago, my four-legged buddy, AJ (the basset hound), managed to find some aluminum foil left over from the lasagna. Needless to say, he did not want to give that foil up, under any circumstance. In fact, the more I tried to get it from him, the tighter he clenched his mouth shut. What was funny though was I had freshly cooked hamburger meat in my hand in an attempt to bribe AJ into giving up the foil, but he did not go for it. I put food on his nose, that didn’t work either. I had better things for him than the aluminum foil, but for some reason, he felt like that was his prized possession.

Aren’t we like that at times with God? We hold onto something in our lives that, if we keep our grip on it, or consume it, it will destroy us? But, we become blinded to the truth of God’s goodness through our own desires. When we surrender to the Master, He will take what we have and give us His goodness and reward our obedience and faithfulness.

God will always honor and reward our obedience to Him, but that often means letting something in our lives go that is not fruitful. Yes, it may bring us pleasure or satisfaction, but if it abuses His gifts or does not bear fruit, it is time to cut ties.

Heavenly Father, I know You want the best for me in this life, not for my own benefit, but for Your glory. I know my purpose is to glorify You in all I do, so open the eyes of my heart to the things You want me to let go and cut ties with. Show me what You want me to surrender to You, and draw near to me as I draw nearer to You. -Amen

God speaks to us through the Bible, and His Word is living and applicable to our lives. I believe today if we listen closely, we would hear Him say:

My child, give me what you have, and I will reward you with a more fulfilled life, a life that bears fruit for My glory and Kingdom. Surrender those things that hold you back from an intimate relationship with Me and I will draw near to you and empower you to a victorious life.

As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.

1 Peter 1:14 NIV
