“Stay true to what you believe.” Desmond Doss

Today is the last day of 2017. The end of a year, the mark of new beginnings just hours away. As I wrestled with the topic for today, I knew so many of you have read something along the lines of goal setting, planning, resolutions, fasting, just to name a few, so I wanted to provide a different type of challenge and encouragement. If you have seen the movie Hacksaw Ridge, directed by Mel Gibson, you are aware of the name Desmond Doss. Doss was a conscientious objector during World War II and saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. His efforts did not come without tremendous cost, both personally and in battle. 

 
We can learn a lot from the WWII generation, but in this case, I believe there’s a lesson in the movie and importantly, the life of Desmond Doss. He stood by what he believed, he stuck to his principles, whether we believe him to be right or wrong, and proceeded to become one of the most renowned soldiers in WWII. Against all odds, Desmond Doss left a legacy. Against all odds, you and I can stand strong in our faith, carry the gospel to the nations, and leave a lasting legacy of good in our communities. Don’t be swayed by external challenges in 2018. Resolve today that, no matter what, you will persevere and accomplish that mission God has called you to do. Happy New Year!

Heavenly Father, I give you my plans and dreams. I give you this new year and all my hopes. Grant me wisdom, discernment, and direction through every day, and let all I do glorify your great name. -Amen
