The Real Cost of Love
In business, we want to know the real cost of services, products, and the bottom line, financially, in order to measure success related to operating a business. Any fiscally-minded individual would seek to know the real cost of something before making a decision, most of the time, on large investments. For example, the real cost of financing a vehicle isn’t the purchase price, it’s the purchase price, interest rate, maintenance, fuel, insurance, etc. There are some things in life we must count the cost of before we make an educated and prudent decision. Love is not one of those decisions we have the liberty to measure real cost before deciding to invest in others with.
So what is the “real cost” of love? Why even ask such a thing? The real cost of love is not answered with a simple response. Its cost is complex and often difficult to calculate. The real cost of love isn’t measured in the bedroom under the sheets, or in the money you give. The real cost of love is time, being present. It is sacrifice. It often means enduring pain, showing kindness, patience, and suppressing emotions in order to keep peace and effectively address conflict. The real cost of love was shown by God, who sent His only Son, who gave His everything for you and me. So, in oversimplified terms, the real cost of love, is everything. We don’t have the liberty of withholding our love if we deem the cost too high, we are commanded to give our all. Today, it may not be easy to love some, but we are required to love all. If you, as I have, find it difficult to love some people, remember how difficult you may be to love at times, and how unrelenting God’s love is for you. That often helps me see the true cost of love.
Heavenly Father, Thank You for giving me the heart to love, and helping me see the real cost of love in the sacrifice You made for me. -Amen
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. (John 15:13)
By this we know love, that [Jesus] laid down his life for us. (1 John 3:16, ESV)
