Redefining Good
We have reduced the definition of the word “good” to describe behavior, food, and a myriad of other things, situations, and people. We know what good food is, who good people are, and where the good deals are at, but we have difficulty in comprehending the goodness of God. Why? Imagine looking through a telescope at the stars. There are various lens strengths we can use that help us see more clearly and deeper into space. It would be foolish, however, to use a telescope to read a book. As silly as that comparison is, I believe too often we are using the wrong lens to define the goodness of God. When we hear, “His ways are higher than our ways,” it refers to that which has already been done in heaven, that which is already finished in eternity, and in our lives and existence, we cannot see that. He sees our prayers as already answered. The need is already met. The sickness is already healed. It’s done in heaven, and our job is to obey His Word and He will bring to pass on earth what is already in existence in heaven. Now, that’s what I call “good.”
There are no “good” deeds, and when we measure “good” based on the sum of who God is, we see there is no good thing in this world. Merely adequate. Jesus Himself said, “There is only One who is good.” Think about it from the book of Genesis. We call biscuits and gravy good, God created the heavens and earth, as well as you and me, and called it good. That’s the disparity in the measuring stick we are looking at. We are attempting to read a book with a telescope, or attempting to define what is good by using a diluted definition of the word; often, our “good” is only what is pleasing to us and meets our standards. God’s definition of good is so much higher, so much better, and absolutely blows my mind. So, today, when you pray for that “good” job, or a “good” marriage, consider your standard for good. It’s time we redefine good and match it to the standard God has given. Now, that, my friends, is redefining good.
Heavenly Father, Thank You for setting the standard of what “good” is. I know it is difficult for me to comprehend or understand what Your goodness is, but I know that You love me, and You alone are good. May my life be pleasing to You and today, all I do, glorify Your name. -Amen
“Why ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. But to answer your question—if you want to receive eternal life, keep the commandments.”
