A common saying I recall from growing up in church is, “If the devil ain’t attacking you, you ain’t living right.” God did not provide us with spiritual armor for our pleasure and enjoyment. He equipped us with it for battle. And battles are not without the enemy’s attacks. We do not base our defense strategy on physical weapons alone. Instead, we discover it in times of prayer and fasting. The Holy Spirit is our defense against the enemy’s spiritual attacks. He equips us, and he sustains us. There are times when the most effective protection is obeying his command to “be still” (Psalm 46:10 ESV). God’s commandments aren’t only to address sinful behavior. They are also to protect us from the evil one. When we walk in the truth of God’s Word and follow him, we will face many battles, but with his Word, through prayer, and depending on his Spirit, we can overcome and be victorious. Our defense is the presence of God. Spend time in his presence and prepare for battle.
Heavenly Father, go before me in the assignments I have been given in life. As I seek you and study your Word, equip me with the spiritual armor I need to be victorious. You are my defense. Amen.
How does spiritual defense strategy differ from physical defense strategy?
The Lord is my revelation-light to guide me along the way; he’s the source of my salvation to defend me every day. I fear no one! I’ll never turn back and run from you, Lord; surround and protect me.
Psalm 27:1 TPT
